Narooma Post Office to reopen

February 15, 2024 6:05 am in by

The Narooma Post Office (PO) is set to reopen soon after abruptly closing last week.

The PO was locked up to keep staff and the community safe after a lead contaminant was found in the back room of the post office.

An Australia Post Spokesperson confirmed with East Coast Radio that the Narooma branch would reopen next week (on a day yet to be confirmed of the week starting February 19) after testing came back clear.

“The Narooma Post Office is expected to reopen next week following the completion of testing and works that were conducted as a precaution after a lead contaminant was detected in the back room of the post office,” the spokesperson said.

“Tests were conducted, including air monitoring tests, that all came back clear.

“Safety is and has been our number one priority, so we thank customers for their patience and understanding.”

PO Box Mail has been redirected to the Distribution Centre located at 1/8 Murphy Place in Narooma, with locals asked to visit the Central Tilba (2 Bate Street), Bodalla (66a Princes Highway) or Moruya (15 Church Street) PO’s between 9am-5pm Monday to Friday for all other postal services until the Narooma branch reopens.

While some say they received a letter about an indefinite closure of the post office, others were shocked to find the PO closed last week.

One Narooma resident who wanted to remain anonymous, tried to access the post office after 9am on Monday (February 5).

“I had a card in my PO Box to pick up a parcel, so I went into the Post Office to pick it up, the door was locked, there were two customers inside, when they’d finished, someone came with a key to let them out, they wouldn’t let me in, and they said ‘we’ve just received a phone call and we’ve been shut down,” he said.
