Any locals or visitors to the Far South Coast who’ve been on a whale watching tour know what a thrill it can be, and right now it’s a busy time on the ‘humpback highway’ up and down the coast.
So on the latest iHeart Far South Coast podcast, we chat with Simon Millar from Sapphire Coastal Adventures who runs whale watching tours out of Bermagui, Merimbula and Eden and we catch up with Rosalind Butt who ran Cat Balou cruises with her husband Gordon out of Eden for the better part of four decades.
The pair provide insights into the history of whale watching in our region and how it’s changed over the years.
Plus we catch up with one of our best wildlife photographers, Tathra’s David Rogers, on how to get that perfect photo of a whale and a whole lot more.

“I always listen to commentary on the boat, particularly Simon or Jess, pointing out where the whale is in relation to the boat,” Rogers told us on the iHeart Far South Coast Podcast.
“So I’ve always got my ear on the commentary and my eye down the camera on the water,” he said.
“I make sure I’m totally focused on the whale because you never know when it’s going to strike into action and to capture that moment where it’s exiting the water is just magic.”
“Unless you’ve got a good camera, I wouldn’t bother trying to get too many photos while on tour, a video maybe but your iPhone photos are never going to be as good as what the professional cameras will take.”
