The Princes Highway has reopened overnight after a man died and two women were seriously injured in a three-car crash on the South Coast yesterday.
Just after 1pm on Sunday (September 11), an SUV towing a caravan and a ute travelling north on the Princes Highway, and an SUV travelling south, collided on the Princes Highway, near Summerhill Road at South Pambula.
The male passenger of the SUV travelling south died at the scene, with the female driver of that car, taken to South Eastern Regional Hospital in a critical condition.
The female passenger of the SUV towing the caravan was airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a serious condition with pelvic and internal injuries.
The driver of that vehicle and the driver of the ute were taken to Hospital in Bega for mandatory testing with minor injuries.
A crime scene was established and will be investigated by the Crash Investigation Unit.
Peter from Eden was one of the first on the scene and described the crash as “graphic” and a “horrible scene”.
“It happened in front of me being the only other car there,” Peter told East Coast Radio.
“I pulled over and called triple zero and then rendered assistance to a horrific scene,” he said.
“There was a few other helpers there as well, and we were trying to give some CPR to one of the gentleman that were in the accident and we all tried as hard as we could but it was a pretty bad scene.”
The Princes Highway was closed in both directions for around 10 hours but reopened just before 11:30pm on Sunday.
A brief will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
