The Rural Fire Service (RFS) plan to undertake three hazard reduction burns on the Far South Coast today (Friday March 8).
Burn-offs are scheduled for Surf Beach, Mystery Beach and Pambula today, with smoke to settle over surrounding areas. This is on top of the Forrestry Corporation hazard reduction burns happening in the Nullica State Forest between Pambula and Eden over the next two months that began this week.
District Co-ordinator with the Far South Coast RFS, Chris Anderson told East Coast Radio, the RFS burns would start early Friday morning.
“They will start early, go all day, and there will be lots of smoke in the air up and down the coast today and across the weekend,” Anderson said.
As the prescribed burn will generate hot embers, heat and smoke, authorities are asking local homeowners and businesses to:
-keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
-keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
-ensure pets have a protected area if outdoors
-retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
-remove washing from clotheslines
-ensure pets have a protected area
-if driving, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on and
-if you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
Please only call Triple Zero (000) if you see unattended fire.
