Emergency medical evacuation on Cruise Ship off Far South Coast

People between Eden and Moruya may have heard a jet and a chopper flying around the Far South Coast last night.

A 73-year-old had to be medically transported off the foreign-flagged Norwegian cruise ship, Viking Orion, around 7pm on Wednesday (January 22) with the transfer taking several hours.

An Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokesperson told ARN they tasked the Wollongong based NSW Ambulance (TOLL) Rescue Helicopter to conduct the medical evacuation.

With top cover support from the Melbourne based Challenger jet that had oversight of the evacuation operation.

Top cover usually refers to maintaining communication with the helicopter, observing winching operations, and advising the helicopter crew of potential hazards during the medical evacuation operation.

“The patient was successfully transported to Sydney,” the AMSA spokesperson said.

It’s unknown at this time what the medical incident/condition was however the Viking Orion was on route from Melbourne to Sydney, travelling offshore between Tathra and Bermagui at the time of the evacuation.

The passenger Ship which is 228 meters long and 34 metres wide, has since docked in Sydney.
