Poyner told East Coast Radio he got the shock of his life when his mum told him, she’d signed up him for Australian Idol.

“I’ve always watched it as a kid and always wanted to go on it but never thought I’d be ready or good enough,” Poyner said.

“One day I got home from work and mum told me she signed me up,” he continued.

“I didn’t believe her at first, I was like ‘ha ha very funny’ then she showed me the email and I was like ‘oh my god Australian Idol’ it didn’t feel like it was real.

“I was over the moon, so a few weeks later we left Narooma early in the morning to audition and we got to around Moruya and I forgot my guitar, so we had to go back and get it, before we made the long drive to Sydney.”

In tonight’s episode which airs on Channel 7 from 7:30pm, Poyner will aim to be selected in the top 50 contestants across the country, as he performs in front of KIIS 1065 FM broadcaster Kyle Sandilands, ARIA Award-winning singer-songwriter Amy Shark, and Grammy award-winning singer-songwriters Meghan Trainor, and Harry Connick Junior.

“Just auditioning meant a lot to me and I was so stoked to be there but making the top 50 would be amazing,” Poyner said.

Poyner said he began playing the guitar in primary school, where his passion for music really kicked off.

Jakob is playing at the Moruya Celebrates Festival and is a regular performer at the Moruya markets and in pubs around Narooma.

“I’ve been living on the far south coast my whole life, and I’ve been doing gigs from Bega to Bermagui and Narooma and pubs and clubs and I’ve just started doing private gigs at weddings and functions as well,” Poyner said.
